This Project includes a 540 foot long, 4-span, cast-in-place, post-tensioned, box girder bridge over 12 lanes of traffic that cannot be shut down for more than a few nighttime hours. This project has encountered a significant technical challenge in constructing cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) piles, each 8 feet in diameter and over 100 feet deep, particularly in wet conditions. The project, comprising 17 CIDH piles, necessitated the use of slurry to prevent hole collapse. Additionally, large diameter permanent steel casings were employed to support the upper 12 feet of each hole. Drilling slurry was carefully managed onsite in baker tanks with zero discharge. Comprehensive gamma-gamma testing was conducted along the entire length of each pile, revealing anomalies requiring repair, a diagnosis confirmed independently by cross-hole sonic testing. In response, the contractor proposed utilizing a pressure grout system to address these anomalies, followed by the injection of pressurized grout into the voids for repair. The project is being performed in full accordance with the Caltrans Local Assistance Procedures Manual, with Caltrans oversight, per the 2018 Caltrans Standard Specifications & Plans, and per many of the Caltrans technical manuals. This includes Construction Manual, California MUTCD, Construction Records and Procedures, Prestressing Manual – Falsework Manual and Trenching & Shoring Manual.
