The I-880 Innovation Bridge and Trail Project creates a safe, direct bicycle and pedestrian route connecting the Warm Springs/South Fremont BART Station to the employment hub west of I-880. It completes the southernmost segment of the East Bay Greenway (Reach 6), linking to the Bay Trail for a seamless non-motorized network. Connecting 4,000 new housing units to regional jobs (40,000) and open spaces, the project enhances mobility, promotes sustainability, and supports regional growth.
Key components include a 3,300-foot at-grade Class I multi-use trail along Kato Road, 540 feet near Fremont Boulevard, and an 850-foot I-880 overcrossing bridge with 625 feet of approach ramps. The bridge features a 200-foot-tall single-tower cable-stayed design, enhancing the main span’s curvature while integrating pathways, lighting, landscaping, and signage. A raised cycle track along Fremont Boulevard connects the bridge to local infrastructure, ensuring safe, efficient multimodal access.
Ghirardelli is one of two experts chosen by Caltrans and the City of Fremont for the Constructability Review Panel. The panel has reviewed plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) at 65% and 95% stages, with two more reviews before bidding. Its ongoing role ensures project feasibility and effectiveness, providing guidance during construction to address challenges and maintain integrity.
