Ghirardelli Associates is supporting the County of Humboldt in the Honeydew Bridge Replacement Project (DPW 2023-004), a critical infrastructure upgrade aimed at replacing the aging Mattole River crossing. Originally constructed in 1920, the existing 386-foot-long, single-lane Camelback steel truss bridge has been deemed functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. The replacement is essential to improve safety, accessibility, and long-term resiliency for the surrounding region.
The project will replace the outdated structure with a modern two-lane bridge designed to current Caltrans and seismic safety standards. Roadway approaches will be upgraded to include two 12-foot lanes, 4-foot shoulders, and 3-foot unpaved shoulders to better accommodate all vehicle types and improve overall roadway geometry.
In addition to improving mobility and connectivity to the remote Mattole Valley, the project enhances emergency response access, supports local economic activity, and significantly reduces ongoing maintenance and seismic risk. The work is being delivered in compliance with Caltrans Local Assistance Procedures and strict environmental regulations to preserve the surrounding ecosystem.
