Humboldt County Department of Public Works: On-Call Construction Management

Ghirardelli provides construction engineering support services including roadway and structures construction inspection, material inspection, and office engineering. Ghirardelli is responsible for staff training, development and assignments, equipment, safety programs, budget and cost controls, coordinating subconsultant work and maintaining DBE goals.

As part of our on-call contract with Humboldt County, Ghirardelli has provided construction management services on over 29 task orders including the following.

Shelter Cove Road: The purpose of this project was to conduct storm damage repairs to Shelter Cove Road. A large section of the road was washed out in a landslide. A 155’ retaining wall was built on the downhill side of the road, using 20 CISS Piles, to create a safe and permanent solution for the roadway. The new section of road features two 12’ lanes with 2’shoulders, and is 485’ long. Five Drainage Inlets, an 18” HDPE storm drain, and 6” perforated plastic pipe underdrains were installed to control the flow of water through the project. A 359’, 18” HDPE pipe down drain was utilized to transport the water down the hillside. The overside drain was secured to the hillside using a Cable Anchorage System. Ghirardelli provided construction management services. Mike Strahan was the onsite Assistant Resident Engineer.

Panther Gap: This project repaired storm damage on Panther Gap Road, providing a safe and permanent solution for traffic. The project included removing the slide material, stabilizing the hillside, and then constructing the new road. Chase Richardson was the acting Resident Engineer, and Wyatt Coonrod was the onsite Assistant Resident Engineer. This project had over 57,000 CY of native material removed from the slide area. A 590’ bench was created 40’ above the roadway. The bench is used to catch water running down the hillside and six overside drains were installed, to control the flow of water and minimize erosion. The bench will also catch rocks or debris rolling down the hillside and stabilize the hillside in general. The new section of road is 14’ wide and 2700’ long, with a 2’ shoulder and a ditch on the inboard side.

Swain Slough Bridge: The purpose of this project is to improve public safety by providing a safe and permanent solution for traffic to cross Swain Slough. This was accomplished by replacing the existing three‐span timber‐stringer bridge with a new single-span concrete structure. The existing bridge has been in service since 1955 and is currently classified as structurally deficient.
