Humboldt County Department of Public Works: Humboldt Bay Trail South

The Humboldt Bay Trail South project is critical in enhancing connectivity between Eureka and Arcata along the scenic Humboldt Bay shoreline. This multi-use trail is a crucial addition to the broader Humboldt Bay Trail network, offering non-motorized transportation options while providing residents and visitors of all ages with breathtaking views of Humboldt Bay. A primary goal of this project is to create a safe, paved path for pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-motorized travelers, entirely separated from the busy Highway 101. Doing so eliminates a significant barrier to active transportation between Eureka and Arcata, allowing for safer, environmentally friendly commuting and recreation. The trail will enhance the transportation network and provide opportunities for residents to connect with nature while promoting healthier lifestyles. A key component involves elevating the ground level along a one-mile segment of the railroad corridor between Brainard and Bracut to a minimum elevation of 11.5 feet above the NAVD88 datum. This project includes repairing and armoring the railroad prism along the Humboldt Bay shoreline and raising the corridor’s elevation between Brainard and Bracut to improve protection from flooding and possible sea level rise. Three bridges will be built on CISS piles, and geosynthetic subgrade reinforcement will be installed for trail widening. Funding for construction is provided by the California Transportation Commission’s Active Transportation Program, California State Coastal Conservancy, and Caltrans District 1. Ghirardelli is providing contract management for the construction management of the trail. Our duties include monitoring budgets and level of resources needed for successful and efficient completion of the work.
