Echo Summit Sidehill Viaduct Replacement – El Dorado County, CA
This $14.1 million project replaced the Echo Summit Bridge, which is located in El Dorado County, 7 miles west of the city of South Lake Tahoe, along U.S. Highway 50 near Echo Summit. At the project location, the road width is very narrow and confined by a vertical rock cut slope on the mountain side and a nearly vertical downward slope on the Basin side.
The bridge, which was built in 1939, has been replaced with a new structure that meets current seismic and safety standards. Construction started in May 2019. Work for this project included a full closure of U.S. Highway 50 to install seven 96-foot bridge girders, in addition to demolishing the existing bridge.
Ghirardelli provided support to structure construction for bridge demolition/removal, girder placement, placement of ultra high performance concrete (UHPC), bridge approach slabs, barrier rails and a polyester concrete deck.
