Contra Costa Transportation Authority: Mokelumne Pedestrian Bridge

The Mokelumne Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Overcrossing is a critical active transportation project that restores continuity to the Mokelumne Trail by bridging the gap created during the expansion of State Route 4. Located in Brentwood, the new overcrossing enhances regional connectivity by providing a safe, accessible route for pedestrians and cyclists commuting or recreating across the highway.

The multi-span bridge is supported by columns within the Highway 4 median and features earthen embankment approaches to integrate seamlessly with the existing trail system. The trail path atop the bridge ranges from 12 to 16 feet in width, offering ample space for current users and accommodating future multimodal transit, including potential autonomous shuttle vehicles.

Ghirardelli served as the Structures Representative for this project, providing comprehensive resident engineering services to ensure construction conformance with Caltrans Standard Plans and Specifications. Our team managed RFIs, submittals, and change orders while overseeing field construction activities to maintain schedule, quality, and safety standards. The project also required specialized engineering support for falsework design, camber calculations, and span-specific point load analyses. Throughout construction, environmental considerations and long-term transit planning were prioritized, particularly given the project’s proximity to a potential future BART station. This $13 million infrastructure investment closes a key gap in the regional trail network, improving mobility options for the community and contributing to a more sustainable transportation future.
